This book traces the development of Russian policy towards China and Japan in the Eltsin and Putin periods. It shows how important engagement in East Asia is for Russia, how difficult managing policy in this region is because of the need for a multi-polar approach, and how Russia's domestic agenda influences policy to a high degree. Drawing on the most up-to-date sources, this book provides an in-depth examination of Russia's relations with China and Japan.
