He was raised in Mi''thnah Al-Shahm, one of the neighborhoods of Old Damascus. He had four siblings; three brothers and one sister, Mu''taz, Rashid, Nizar, and Haifa and is the brother of the famous Arab poet Nizar Qabbani.
