Lane-Fox was the eldest son of Sackville Lane-Fox and his wife, Lady Charlotte (the only daughter of the 6th Duke of Leeds). In 1846, he became a Cornet by purchase in the Royal Horse Guards and exchanged to the 13th Light Dragoons in 1849.
