Nella Denzey Markoe Liska was born in 1948 in London, England, just a year before the passing of the influential spiritual teacher, George Ivanovitch Gurdjieff. Her family was already familiar with Gurdjieff's teachings and had been introduced to the Work in England. In 1954, they emigrated to Canada, where her parents, Trevor and Elsa Denzey, became founding members of the Toronto Gurdjieff Group. The group was led by Mme de Hartmann initially, and later by Mrs. Louise Welch.At the age of 13, Nella started her career in Movements in Mme Ouspensky's residence, Franklin Farms, located in New Jersey, under the supervision of Mme Jeanne de Salzmann. Upon returning to Toronto, Nella and her sister Fiona attended regular classes with Alfred Étievant, who was entrusted by Mr. Gurdjieff himself to oversee Movements instruction, and Olga Adie, a member of the Paris Group. In 1969, Nella left Canada and moved to New York to continue her study of Movements under the guidance of Jessmin Howarth, Jeanne de Salzmann, and Paul Reynard.In 1972, Nella was examined by Marthe Gaigneron, who was in charge of Movements and was authorized by Marthe to teach classes. Over the past 50 years, Nella has taught Gurdjieff Movements in various locations, including New York, Toronto, Maine, New Jersey, Philadelphia, and Austin, Texas. She has participated in numerous demonstrations, both public and private, and is one of the original founders of the Gurdjeff Heritage Society. She also works with the groups of J.G.
