Friedrich Stoltze (1816 - 1891) wurde in Frankfurt am Main geboren und absolvierte ebenda, in Paris und Lyon eine Kaufmannslehre. Währenddessen lernte er u.a. die Dichterin Marianne von Willemer kennen. Stoltze nahm aktiv Anteil an den politischen Umbrüchen seiner Zeit und kommentierte die Ereignisse des Hambacher Festes 1832, der Revolution von 1848 sowie der Reichsgründung 1870/71 und das Ende der Bismarck-Ära. 1841 erschein sein erster Gedichtband, 1852 seine Frankfurter Krebbelzeitung, 1860 gründete er die satirische freiheitlich-demokratische Wochenzeitung Frankfurter Latern, in der er wichtige Persönlichkeiten und aktuelle Ereignisse nicht nur in Frankfurter Mundart aufs Korn nahm. Wegen antipreußischer Haltung musste er 1866 zeitweise aus Frankfurt fliehen. 1871 nahm er die Herausgabe der Frankfurter Latern wieder auf. Stoltze starb 1891 in seiner Heimatstadt.
