Safety Beach Post Office opened on 1 October 1953 and closed in 1974. There is currently a large inland harbour and residential development underway in Safety Beach under the name of Martha Cove, named after its location in the cove at the foot of Mount Martha. The project was heavily protested by residents. The project began in 2004, but by 2009 was experiencing considerable financial difficulties.
