Saifuddin rose to prominence as an opposition figure by winning a by-election for the Kedah state assembly seat of Lunas in 2000. However he failed in his bid to be elevated to the federal Parliament in the 2004 election, losing to UMNO's Lim Bee Kau in the seat of Padang Serai. In the 2008 election, Saifuddin contested and won the federal seat of Machang in Kelantan.
