Maruya was mobilized into the Japanese Army in 1945 when still a high-school student. During this time he wrote a series of novels including Ehoba No kao O sakete , Kanata E , and Sasamakura Grass for My . He also translated Joyce's Ulysses in collaboration with Takamatsu Y ichi and Nagai Reiji(1964), as well as Graham Greene.
