"You have made us for yourself, and our hearts are restless until they rest in you" Saint Augustine says to God. His life was an exemplication of this statement. Endowed with an unsual intelligence, with immense knowledge, Augustine began a restless search for God after a care-free life in his youth. This search took him to different philosophical and religious systems: Manichaeism, Skepticism, Platonism, Neo-Platonism and finally Christianity. A brilliant professor of Rhetoric he eventually became the imperial professor of Rhetoric in the court of the Emperor in Milan, the most prestigious academic position in the Roman Empire, which brought him in contact with the great men in the Empire. His restless search for God led him to resign this position; he came back to Africa, sold all his properties, gave the money to the poor, and became a monk and a prolific writer. He had no intention of being a priest, but as his reputation for knowledge and holiness spread far and wide he was ordained a priest by popular demand and subsequently made Bishop of Hippo. With his immense knowledge he refuted heresies that were disturbing the Church and laid the foundation for Christian theology.
