Mohammed Umar urodzi¿ si¿ w Azare w Nigerii, w stanie Bauczi. Uzyskä tytu¿ magistra dziennikarstwa w Moskiewskim Uniwersytecie Pästwowym (1991) i magisterium z zakresu ekonomii politycznej na Middlesex University w Wielkiej Brytanii (1996). Mohammed Umar by¿ cz¿onkiem jury Caine Prize for African Writing w 2009 roku. W 2010 r. zdoby¿ Muslim News Award for Excellence in Arts. Mieszka w Londynie.
