He has a daughter (former member of the band Twister Alley) who teaches college, a sister and brother-in-law who retired from two major retailers' home offices, a deceased father who was a well driller, a deceased mother who was a country singer and musician, and a deceased uncle who was a regular performer on the Grand Ole Opry. Carl served four years in the United States Air Force on Okinawa, in Korea, and in Washington state. He has a BA and MA in sociology, and his hobbies include photography, documentary filmmaking, and writing. He has also met Dolly Parton four times.
