D r Roy Sugarman was born in South Africa in 1953 and trainedin Clinical Psychology and Clinical Neuropsychology. Now a peakperformance expert, he began his career working with amputees andspinal injuries. He rapidly saw the value of an integrated body andbrain response to life's challenges for both injured and intact athletesalike.Consequently he used his training across disciplines to developan integrated approach to rehabilitation. After completing hisundergraduate bachelor's and honours degrees in biological andapplied psychology, he went on to complete his Master's degree inClinical Psychology, which was awarded summa cum laude - hisdissertation addressing Feminism and family violence. He then wona scholarship to complete his doctorate in Clinical Neuropsychology, which he achieved in 1992 studying the effects of fermented sugar inthe brain and on cortical arousal mechanisms.Perceiving the need to train graduates to the level required forneuropsychology accreditation, in his private capacity Dr SugarmanDr Roy SugarmanPage 294developed the only tutoring course available, training some 190candidates over the next decade. These experiences led him tofurther work in brain rehabilitation and he was instrumental in thefounding of the Life Care Rehabilitation Centres in South Africa. Thesecentres consisting of sixty bed units for which he provided training, supervision and clinical expertise.In 2000 Dr Sugarman moved to Adelaide, South Australia, wherehe joined the Royal Adelaide Hospital on their Glenside ExtendedCare program as Senior Clinical Neuropsychologist. He also held ajoint appointment as Clinical Lecturer in the Department of Psychiatryat Adelaide University, as well as tutoring in neuroscience and as amember of the South Australian Psychiatry Training CurriculumCommittee.
