Scandium(III) chloride, ScCl3, is a white ionic compound which is deliquescent and highly water soluble.ScCl3 has the BiI3 layered structure, with 6 coordinate scandium ions. Monomeric ScCl3 is the predominant species in the vapour phase at 900 K, the dimer Sc2Cl6 accounts for approximately 8%. The electron diffraction spectrum indicates that the monomer is planar. Calculations indicate that the dimer is bridged with four Sc-Cl bonds. Scandium(III) chloride is a white crystalline solid with the formula ScCl3. Typical for an ionic solid, it is high-melting, liquefying at 960 °C.
