J'nell and one of her partners, Major Lampton, defend her childhood friend, Qujette Barbarette, against the charge of murder. In the process, another client is freed of a murder charge, and they uncover a murder for hire plot that pits sons against their mother. She sees her old friend, Senator Freddy Breaux retire from the US Senate, and her best friend, George Allen Lange, win that vacated seat. J'nell Montalvo Johnson Rushing, had always believed she was in control of her life. That notion is challenged when she is blindsided by three of her legal partners; the three she trusted above all others; when they reveal to her their affiliation with Felix Petijean', the reputed head of the Louisiana Syndicate. What he reveals to her is almost impossible to accept. The hardest part is the knowledge her parents, several of her partner's and her best friend, have all been a part of the deception. J'nell suffers the loss of many of her older loved ones, and in the process is reunited with an old flame. It is then that she realizes her life had come full circle. J'nell sees all four of her children married and making her a grandmother. She continues to fight for those who cannot fight for themselves. In the process, she takes on several large corporations, and to her mother's chagrin, the Catholic Church. Upon her retirement, she surprises her family and the legal world with a best-selling novel that eventually becomes a major mini-series. Her success is soured when the granddaughter of an old nemesis sues her for slander. Through it all, J'nell never loses her faith in God and gives all the glory to HIM. In her golden years, J'nell reflects on her many accomplishments, all the people who floated in and out of her life, the many lifelong friendships she made, and the fact she had few regrets about her life. At the end, she is happy to know she will be reunited with all those loved ones who went before her.
