LYNN LAUERMAN is a freelance science writer and editor, and the cofounder of J&L Scientific Editing. Lauerman contributed to Human Diseases and Conditions (2000), a health encyclopedia designed for students, published by Charles Scribner's Sons in collaboration with a medical board from the duPont Hospital for Children. She is currently editing the second supplement to the series, a volume on infectious diseases. She also wrote for the 2000 edition of the Science and Technology Almanac. Lauerman, who lives in Carlsbad, California, received her Ph.D. in marine biology from Scripps Institution of Oceanography, University of California, San Diego. WILLIAM ALLSTETTER created and launched Today's Science on File, a monthly science-news digest for high school students. Most recently, he served as Director of Science Communications at Columbia University's College of Physicians & Surgeons. Allstetter is currently a freelance writer, and has published in numerous journals including Technology Review, Discover, and American Health. Allstetter, who lives in New York City, studied biology at Stanford University and has his journalism degree from Columbia University.
