This book examines the correlation between history, national ideology and the politics of the nation-state in the 19th century. It focuses on the formation of a "scientific historical discipline" in Greece which aimed at strengthening a specific version of national history by relating it to the concepts of "objectivity" and "truth". Further it explores relevant processes in other European socio-cultural contexts and concludes by stressing the tremendous impact of nationalism on the historical discipline.
