Claude Joiris wurde am 7. Dezember 1942 in Etterbeek (Brüssel), Belgien, geboren. Er ist Grundschullehrer und studierte 1965 Zoologie an der Freien Universität Brüssel (ULB); Doktor der Wissenschaften (Zoologie, ULB) 1970. Außerdem war er Assistent, Hauptassistent und Professor an der Freien Universität Brüssel (VUB).
