The upwelling season occurred in summer from June to mid-September, however an increase in chlorophyll-a values was only evident in coastal waters. Throughout the year 2002, higher Chl-a concentrations were found near the coast and we could observe a gradual decrease in Chl-a concentrations as we move seaward. Productivity ranged from 200 mgC.m-2.day-1 in oceanic waters in winter and 3000 mgC.m-2.day-1 in coastal waters in late spring respectively.
