The athletic program comprises eight men's sports: baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, swimming, soccer, tennis, and track and field, and nine women's sports: basketball, cross country, golf, swimming, soccer, softball, tennis, track and field, volleyball. Between 1950 and 1971, Seattle University sports teams were known as the Chieftains and competed as a Division I independent school. From 1971 to 1980, the Chieftains competed as a member of the West Coast Conference. Between 1980 to 2002, Seattle University competed in the NAIA. In 2000, Seattle University changed the name of its mascot from Chieftains to Redhawks. During the 2001?2002 year, Seattle University competed in Division III, and competed in Division II from 2002 to 2009.
