John Michael is Professor of English and of Visual and Cultural Studies at the University of Rochester where he is also Director of American Studies. His books include Identity and the Failure of American from Thomas Jefferson to the War on Terror, Anxious Intellects: Academic Professionals, Public Intellectuals, Enlightenment Values, and Emerson and Skepticism: The Cipher of the World.
