The study was aimed at determining the seed quality, vigour, emergence, plant establishment, fibre and seed yields of jute collected from five different seed sources. Nine experiments of which one in laboratory, four on emergence and plant establishment, two on fibre production and two on seed production were conducted during the period from May 2001 to February 2004. The laboratory experiments were conducted at the Agronomy laboratory, Agronomy Division of the Bangladesh Jute Research Institute (BJRI), Dhaka. The emergence and plant establishment experiments were conducted in green house of BJRI, Dhaka and at Jute Agriculture Experimental Station (JAES), Manikganj. Fibre and seed production experiments were conducted at JAES, Manikganj. The jute varieties, CVL-1 of Corchorus capsularis L. and O-9897 of C. olitorius L. were used as study materials. Variety-wise separate experiments were conducted in every step. The treatments comprised five different seed sources of both CVL-1 and O-9897 viz.
