The book presents a wide range of passive structural seismic response control techniques. It explains the details of design, fabrication strategies and testing of a device made of a smart material, Shape Memory Alloy (SMA). It gives details of formulation of a developed thermo-mechanical mathematical model of SMA, which takes into account the residual martensite strain effect and reduced apparent austenite modulus of elasticity. It also proposes a simplified method developed for analytical evaluation of the structural response with and without this damper device and explains its validation carried out by time history analysis of the structure. Lastly, it describes in detail the shake table experiments carried out on the steel structure attached to this device in order to prove its efficacy for attenuating the seismic response.
