In molecular biology a selenoprotein is any protein that includes a selenocysteine (Se-Cys) amino acid residue. Among functionally characterized selenoproteins are five glutathione peroxidases (GPX) and three thioredoxin reductases, (TrxR/TXNRD) which both contain only one Se-Cys.
