There are altogether five stages in its plant. Stages One and Two were completed in 1976 while Stage Three was completed in 1982. Stages Four and Five were added in 1990. In its early years, the plant used crude oil as fuel to generate its turbines; however, this was replaced by natural gas piped from Terengganu in East Malaysia. Oil, however, is still used as a back-up.
