Bishop, theologian, and author Rev. Father Nicholai Velimirovic was of Serbian Orthodox faith and lived from 1880 until 1956. He was educated at the University of Geneva in Switzerland after being born in what is now the country of Serbia. He then worked as a priest and theology professor in Serbia and the United States. Velimirovic was detained at the Dachau concentration camp during World War II as a result of his resistance to the Nazi government. After being freed, he spent the remainder of his life working for the Serbian Orthodox Church and advancing interreligious understanding. Writing often, Velimirovic published a great deal of theological, philosophical, and historical writings. The book "The Prologue of Ohrid," which is a compilation of sermons and observations on the lives of saints, is the work for which he is most known. He is also renowned for his support of the Serbian people through times of war and his initiatives to foster understanding and peace across various ethnic groupings.
