For a long time I have wanted to put into writing some thoughts about a style of evangelism that does not fit the stereotyped images many people have of evangelistic programs in churches. To distinguish what we were doing in the Oak Lane Presbyterian Church of Philadelphia in the late 1950's and early 1960's from some of the other approaches then in vogue, I called it 'service evangelism.'

Richard Stoll Armstrong is Ashenfelter Professor Emeritus at Princeton Theological Seminary. The author of many books and articles, he has held pastorates in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, and Indiana.
