Hans Christian Andersen wurde am 2. April 1805 in Odense (Dänemark) geboren und wuchs in ärmlichen Verhältnissen auf. Der Dänenkönig Friedrich VI., dem seine Begabung aufgefallen war, ermöglichte ihm 1822 den Besuch der Lateinschule in Slagelsen. Bis 1828 wurde ihm auch das Universitätsstudium bezahlt. Andersen unternahm Reisen durch Deutschland, Frankreich und Italien, die ihn zu lebhaften impressionistischen Studien anregten. Der Weltruhm Andersens ist auf den insgesamt 168 von ihm geschriebenen Märchen begründet. Andersen starb am 4.8.1875 in Kopenhagen.
