Mircea Eliade, geboren 1907 in Bukarest, studierte von 1925 - 31 in Bukarest und Kalkutta; längerer Aufenthalt im Himalaya-Gebiet, ausgedehnte Asien-Reisen. Seit den fünfziger Jahren bis zu seinem Tod, 1986, Professor für Religionswissenschaft in Chicago.
