Shamsud-Din Bahar Jabbar appeared to lead a quiet but dutiful life amidst Houston's diverse community. He was a U.S. Army veteran, an information technology student, a convert to Islam, and had recently held a six-figure job. His outward persona gave no indication that he could be responsible for the brutal terrorist attack that occurred on New Year's Day. Around 3 a.m. on Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Jabbar, driving a white pickup truck rented in Houston, rammed into a crowd of revelers before opening fire. At least 15 people were killed in what became one of the nation's worst terror attacks. Jabbar died in a shootout with the police. Inside the truck, authorities discovered an Islamic State flag. A senior law enforcement official reported that Jabbar had posted several videos on his Facebook account Tuesday evening. The videos, seemingly addressed to his family and recorded while driving, showed him pledging allegiance to ISIS.
