Governments introduce regulations that aim at driving their respective economies and equally address social challenges inherent in such economies. Black Economic Empowerment (BEE) is one such agenda of the African National Congress (ANC) led government in South Africa since it was elected in 1994. The rationale for empowerment is simple: to redress the economic exclusion of the majority of South Africans and to create a more equitable and stronger economy. Black Economic Empowerment has come to be one of the initiatives that the government has introduced, controversial as it is, as a means to empower the blacks within the formal sector of the economy. This book looks at the impact of this policy as is reflected in the companies' share price movement after the public announcement of BEE deals. The book seems to suggest that in general, the BEE announcements reflect investor confidence even though these gains are short-lived. There are lessons in this book for both investors and policy makers who are involved in drafting economy driven regulations.
