"This study of the book of Philippians will combine biblical theology, conducting an inductive study of the text using Paul's own terminology whenever possible; theological interpretation, with a focus on teaching about God; and theological ethics, showing how doctrine and conduct appear across the letter. It will be a study of Philippians itself, not a study of secondary sources or the history of interpretation. It will be up to date, taking account of the new perspective, Paul and empire, and use of the Old Testament and literary features-but not driven by a response to such developments. It will offer a thorough treatment of the use of the Old Testament in and Jewish background to Philippians, and it will push back against the reductionism of simple emphasis on joy or any particular theme while still recognizing the interpretive gains of recent scholarship"--
