In an interdisciplinary effort authors from different countries and professional backgrounds have co-operated to present this volume on irrigation and water management in the mountainous regions of South and Central Asia. Most knowledge linked to irrigation and water management in these regions is often part of oral traditions. The case studies in this volume try to preserve some of this knowledge and present it to a wider audience. The volume covers for the first time a region spreading from the Central Asian republics of the former Soviet Union to the Eastern Himalayas and Bhutan while also providing a new discussion about methods and working techniques in conducting field research.
