Born in New York in 1920, Paul Bowles is considered one of the most remarkable American authors of the twentieth century. He began his artistic career as a composer and travelled widely in Europe and North Africa, settling in Tangier with his novelist wife Jane in the 1940s. Bowles is often credited with being a literary inspiration to the Beat authors.
