This book was compiled and designed to assist anyone in his or her search for family members living in Shenandoah County, Virginia, during the middle to late 1800s. This publication will, for the first time, enable genealogical researchers to add this important document to their personal research library. The entire census has been accurately reproduced as it was originally compiled. The work includes all 14,924 residents of the county in 1870. An extensive index facilitates the process of quickly locating individuals. This work has added value because it presents a concise look at the residents of a county that felt the devastation of the Civil War and the loss of many men. Detailed charts summarize personal economic worth and property value. Additional charts reflect where individuals were born and how they were employed. Assembled data depicts the number and status of blacks and women in the county after the war. More charts and a county map reflect the census districts or townships as they existed in 1870. The census for each district or township is arranged according to the dwelling (family) number beginning with the first dwelling.
