Shipping history in summary... The history of maritime shipping stretches back thousands of years to the times of the earliest humans, for as long as there have been people they have wanted to explore what was beyond the seas. Today, maritime shipping is just as important as it has ever been, although the countries benefiting from these trade routes have shifted throughout history. It's well known that Greece is a maritime nation by tradition, as shipping is arguably the oldest form of occupation of the Greeks and has been a key element of Greek economic activity since ancient times. Today, shipping is the country's most important industry while the Greek Merchant Navy controlled the world's largest merchant fleet, in terms of tonnage. The last 12 years I was extensively involved in the shipping at the corporate level having organized 6 main event-forums. Our aim was and still is to further promote this business within the business society and benefit from its growth in the context of the local market recession.
