Platelets are central players in maintenance of hemostasis and blood clotting. They are highly sensitive cells exhibiting variety of functional responses depending on the stimulus. Platelets remain hyperactive' in thrombotic disorders like coronary artery diseases, stroke and diabetes mellitus playing a critical role in their pathogenesis. Thus investigation of platelet behavior under different conditions is an important area of investigation to retain these cells in their resting state. Here we explore comparatively less studied areas of platelet biology and attempts to elucidate the signaling mechanism during platelet storage for transfusion purpose, physiologically important process of fibrin clot retraction and upon exposure to most commonly used nanoparticles; nanosilver as a model of foreign stimuli. Nanosilver retards platelet activation indicating its potential to be promoted as an effective anti-thrombotic agent, or use as a stent material, where its anti-bacterial and anti-platelet properties could complement each other. This work is intended for diverse readership like biologists, material scientists, nanotechnologists, physicians as well as the pharma professionals.
