Michael Maier [1568-1622] was an eminent physician and philosopher, who wrote extensively on alchemy. He responded to the appearance of the Rosicrucian manifestos in 1614-15 by defending the Rosicrucian Order from the various attacks and malevolent information distributed against it. His 'Silentium post clamores' (the silence after the clamour) of 1617 is an in-depth investigation of the supposed Brotherhood, exploring the different views on the Rosicrucians and outlining what information there was available about this mysterious society. Translated by Adam McLean from the German.
