Simulation and Optimization of Internal Combustion Engines provides the fundamentals and up-to-date progress in multidimensional simulation and optimization of internal combustion engines. While it is impossible to include all the models in a single book, this book intends to introduce the pioneer and/or the often-used models and the physics behind them providing readers with ready-to-use knowledge. Key issues, useful modeling methodology and techniques, as well as instructive results, are discussed through examples. Readers will understand the fundamentals of these examples and be inspired to explore new ideas and means for better solutions in their studies and work. Topics include combustion basis of IC engines, mathematical descriptions of reactive flow with sprays, engine in-cylinder turbulence, fuel sprays, combustions and pollutant emissions, optimization of direct-injection gasoline engines, and optimization of diesel and alternative fuel engines.

Autorenporträt
Dr. Zhiyu Han is currently a professor in the School of Automotive Studies of Tongji University in China. He is a recognized automotive engine expert. Dr. Han started research on multidimensional engine simulation in the early 1990s. He proposed variable-density turbulence and heat transfer models to improve engine simulation accuracy. He also developed practical engineering methods that enable combustion system optimization at the pre-prototype stage, making pioneering contributions in the use of advanced modeling techniques for rapid and cost-effective engine design and development. Dr. Han is a Fellow of the Society of Automotive Engineering International. He has a Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin-Madison, Wisconsin, USA. His career spanned auto industry and universities with various job positions including Staff Technical Specialist in Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, USA; General Manager of the Technical R&D Center of Great Wall Motor Company in Baoding, China; General Manager of Changfeng Engine Company in Changsha; and Director of Advanced Powertrain Research Center of Hunan University in Changsha.
