Single by Chance, Mothers by Choice is the first book to provide an intimate portrait of women who have chosen to become single mothers. Drawing on in-depth personal interviews, Hertz follows individual women as they make the psychological break with traditional expectations and identify specific paths to motherhood. These routes include using known and anonymous donors, adoption, and chancing pregnancy. A candid portrayal of the new single motherhood, the book reveals how women are recreating our notions of family, and the pitfalls single parents continue to face.
