Profesor emérito de la Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Allí creó el área de Estudios Anglo-Portugueses. Colaboró en varias iniciativas, como la formación de intérpretes de conferencias (EEC). 1988, vicerrectora de la recién creada Universidade Aberta; 1990, directora de la Biblioteca Nacional, de la que dimitió en 1996. Vicepresidenta de la Fundación Inés de Castro.
