Walter Tevis (1928-1984) fue un uno de los grandes escritores estadounidenses de la segunda mitad del siglo XX. Sus relatos cortos, que comenzó a escribir en los años cincuenta, se publicaron en revistas como The Saturday Evening Post, Esquire, Redbook, Cosmopolitan y Playboy. También publicó cinco novelas: El buscavidas (1959, Impedimenta, 2025) -que saltaría a la gran pantalla en 1961-, El hombre que cayó a la Tierra (1963), Sinsonte (1980; Impedimenta, 2022), Gambito de Dama (1983), Las huellas del sol (1983; Impedimenta, 2023) y El color del dinero (1984). En 2023 se publicó una antología de sus relatos, bajo el título de The King is Dead, que pronto será publicada por Impedimenta. Walter Tevis murió a los cincuenta y ocho años en Nueva York debido a un cáncer de pulmón.
