Sir Algernon Cholmondley-Rute is the despised second son of a wealthy aristocratic British family. Having failed in the marriage his father arranged for him, Lord Cholmondley-Rute made sure Algernon was posted well away from England by the Foreign Service. Algernon avoids maritally disastrous women as he becomes a hugely successful international diplomat. Celebrating early retirement, he tours New York State in his Lamborghini. Seeing a Victorian house there, Algernon is staggered by its identical details to those which he had sketched during boring Service Mission meetings four thousand miles away in Moscow. Purchasing this enchanted estate, he meets Laburnum with whom Algernon's friendship increases as her 'golden age' studies involve foreign affairs. Working together, they get help from the secretly talking estate dogs who are critical of the unforgivable mess humans have made of the world.
