Smart antenna systems are one of the promising technologies that will enable a higher capacity in wireless networks by effectively reducing multi path fading and co-channel interference. They provide opportunities for higher system capacity and improved quality of service with efficient utilization of bandwidth among more number of users. Thus, they are now becoming a critical adjunct for increasing the performance of a myriad of wireless applications. They continuously monitor their coverage areas and adapt to the users' direction providing an antenna pattern that tracks the user and provides maximum gain in the his direction. As an effort to relate the topic to practical work and to realize the concept of beamsteered linear array, the prototypes of microstrip linear phased arrays for smart antenna application have been considered for the study. Single element microstrip antenna (SEMA), which is extended to two element microstrip array (TEMA) and four element microstrip array (FEMA) has been simulated using IE3D and detailed experimental studies have been carried out in this regard.
