With population growth, the challenges for governments, businesses and academia grow. New forms of energy generation, preservation of natural resources, efficient transportation, education, health, safety and food are the great challenges to be overcome in the coming years. In this context, information and communication technologies (ICT) play an important role as facilitators for decision making and for the creation of innovations that improve the capacity of urban infrastructure management and the provision of services to citizens. In the Brazilian scenario, the challenges are even more intense given the current conditions of the technological infrastructure of most cities as well as social disparities. This work aims to demonstrate the current stage of the cities of Rio de Janeiro, Porto Alegre and Curitiba regarding the materialization of the concept of intelligent city as a new paradigm for city management, contributing to the understanding and research agenda on this contemporary theme.
