Periodontitis is a group of inflammatory diseases affecting the supporting tissues of the tooth (periodontium). The periodontium consists of four tissues: gingiva, alveolar bone, cementum and periodontal ligaments. The Inflammation of the marginal gingival tissues is a common condition and its extent and severity can be variable. This condition is known as gingivitis. It is the mildest form of periodontal disease is caused by bacterial biofilm and can be modified by systemic and local influences.
