The Arab Socialist Ba''ath Party is a political party in the Arab World advocating the related concepts of Arab nationalism, Pan-Arabism, and Arab socialism. It was founded in Damascus, Syria in 1940 by the Syrian intellectuals Michel Aflaq, and Salah al-Bitar, as a secular Arab nationalist movement opposed to Western imperialism in the Arab World, and seeking to unify all Arab countries in one state. In Arabic, Ba ath means "renaissance" or "resurrection", referring to Aflaq and al-Bitar''s vision of "resurrecting" the freedom and glory of the Arab Nation that had been destroyed by Ottoman, and Western imperialism an idea covered in Michel Aflaq''s published works On the Way of Resurrection.
