The agroecology proposal is complex and the interests at first appear to be contradictory. The challenge is to promote a transformation that goes beyond considering agroecology merely as a differentiated production strategy for family farmers. The Várzeas de Sousa Irrigated Perimeter is an initiative of the Paraíba State Government with the aim of boosting and dynamising agriculture in its area of influence, with positive effects on the state economy through actions aimed at developing agricultural and agro-industrial activities. The research universe was made up of producers in the Várzeas de Sousa Irrigated Perimeter District (PIVAS), which currently has 178 plots in operation, of which 173 are small producers. Twelve interviews were carried out among the producers chosen at random. The work was also based on a theoretical review of family farming and agroecology. The term 'agroecology' is widespread among farmers, but a small minority are still unaware of it, and it is similarto the organic practices adopted, where most of them say they use organic fertiliser.
