Studies in Social Interaction¬¬¬¬ Studies in Social Interaction publishes research monographs that place social interaction at the centre of discussion. Each volume presents a clear overview of the work which has been done in a particular context, provides examples of how data can be approached and used to uncover social-interactional themes and issues, and explores how research in social interaction can feed into a better understanding of professional practices and develop new research agendas. Social Interaction in Second Language Chat Rooms Christopher J. Jenks 'The conversation analytic perspective of this volume provides original insights on online voice interaction. Jenks' skilful analysis demonstrates how speakers of English as an additional language acquire interactional competence during online social interaction. It is a significant contribution to the burgeoning online interaction research agenda.' Vincenza Tudini, Research Centre for Languages and Cultures, University of South Australia How do speakers of English as an additional language manage their talk and interaction in chat rooms? This book examines second language chat rooms from a social-interaction perspective. It focuses on voice-based chat rooms instead of text-based ones, adding to and enriching the existing body of research on second language textbooks within computer-mediated communication studies. Christopher J. Jenks thoroughly analyzes the interactional effects of technology, and explores in detail the social and linguistic implications of communicating in second language chat rooms. Providing a unique look at how second language talk is organized in an online setting, this book is essential reading for postgraduate students and scholars in computer-mediated communications, social interactions, TESOL and applied linguistics. Christopher Jenks is an Associate Professor of Applied Linguistics at City University of Hong Kong. His research deals primarily with computer-mediated communication, intercultural communication, English as a lingua franca, and second language acquisition. Cover image: (c) Mcarrel/Dreamstime.com.
