Social Media applications have transformed teaching and learning activities. With the advent popularity and development of Web 2.0 applications, all things considered are known as web-based social networking, this presents schools and universities with the chance to go beyond traditional means of conveying knowledge and designs to create student to focus and to customized learning conditions (Sigala, 2007). In this research, traditional literature review was used as it gives the best means of critique and summary of the various literature were studied from high index journal. The analysis was carried out on a selected 70 S.S.C.I. papers between 2003 and 2017. Articles were identified using the search keywords: 'social media', 'behavioral', 'cognitive', 'emotional/affective', 'face book', 'whatsApp', 'twitter', 'student engagement', and social networking'. The search articles gave good case for student engagement to the use of social media and how the various authors perceive it when it is used in the educational sector as it has both positive and negative effect on student performance it terms of behaviors and cognitive wise (Kucuk et al., 2013).
