Social sustainability refers to growth that leads to the harmonious evolution of society. Set research in the past has placed more focus on the environmental and economic pillars, overlooking the critical social one, causing its implications to be somewhat vague. This book determines the aspects of social sustainability that are potentially affected by the gating phenomenon, through formulating a social sustainability framework of social and physical aspects, and analyzing the relevant consequences of gating. A case study is conducted in three neighborhood sub-areas in the new satellite town of Sheikh Zayed, Cairo, each of which is divided into two zones: a gated compound, and an adjacent open development. It showed that gated communities¿ nurtured physical environment boosts their attainment of social sustainability aspects. However, other overlooked aspects generate more negative results within the gates, such as diversity, resulting in similar outcomes compared to open developments. This implies that gating¿s negative impacts ripple from within the gates to the outside.
